How to Create a Spanish Tapas Night at Home

There’s something lovely about a table full of small dishes, good food and everyone helping themselves. A tapas night brings a little of that Spanish holiday feeling into your home—and you don’t need an elaborate menu to make it special.
With a few tasty ingredients, colourful Spanish pottery and a little preparation, you can spend more of the evening at the table with your guests.
Start with a simple menu

The secret to an enjoyable tapas night is variety without giving yourself too much work. Choose a mixture of ready-to-serve favourites and one or two dishes you’d like to prepare.
For an easy sharing spread, try:
- Olives: serve a favourite variety or mix green and black olives together.
- Manchego cheese: cut into small wedges and pair with quince paste or grapes.
- Crusty bread: slice just before serving, with olive oil alongside.
- Roasted peppers: dress with olive oil and a little sherry vinegar.
- Spanish tortilla: cut into bite-sized squares or small wedges.
- Patatas bravas: crispy potatoes with a rich tomato sauce for a warm centrepiece.
You don’t have to make everything yourself. A good tortilla, a jar of roasted peppers and some carefully chosen cheese can be the beginning of a delicious evening.
Check your guests’ dietary preferences before choosing the final menu, and include a few dishes everyone can share.
Choose pottery to suit the food

One of the pleasures of tapas is seeing all the different dishes together. Give each food its own bowl or platter so guests can easily pass things around.
Small pottery bowls are ideal for olives, dips and almonds. A long platter works beautifully for cheese and roasted peppers, while a larger serving dish gives tortilla or potatoes space in the centre of the table.
If you’re serving olives with stones, put out a small empty dish for them. It’s a little detail that makes the table easier to use.
Our Arco Iris collection includes colourful pieces to help you build your own sharing spread. Start with the dishes you’ll reach for most often, then add to your collection over time.
Let the colours do the decorating

Hand-painted pottery brings plenty of character to a table, so the rest of the setting can stay simple.
A plain tablecloth or runner gives the colours room to stand out. Add cloth napkins, water glasses and a few low candles, leaving plenty of space for the food.
There’s no need for every piece to match. You could choose a favourite colour and repeat it across different patterns, or bring together several bright designs for a cheerful, relaxed table.
Keep flowers small and low so guests can see one another and reach the sharing dishes comfortably.
Bring out a jug of something refreshing

A pottery jug makes a lovely finishing touch. Fill it with water and citrus slices, a fruity alcohol-free drink or sangria to share.
Put water on the table from the beginning, along with enough glasses, so everyone can settle in without needing to ask for anything.
If you have a second jug, a few flowers or stems of greenery can turn it into a simple centrepiece.
Prepare ahead and enjoy the evening

Lay the table and choose your serving pieces before you start cooking. It helps to decide which food will go in each dish, especially if you’re putting together several small plates.
Have your room-temperature dishes ready to bring out, then serve warm food as it’s finished. Use pottery for cooking or reheating only where the individual product’s care instructions confirm it is suitable.
Once everyone is seated, let the dishes travel around the table. There’s no need to present everything perfectly or bring it all out at once.
The pleasure of a tapas night is in trying a little of this, sharing a little of that and taking your time together.
